This week both Courtney and Jay presented their recent work at the Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering, and Biotransport Conference. Unlike any year previous, the 2020 conference was held virtually.

Courtney presented her work, Adaptively conforming osteochondral patellar allografts for joint resurfacing: a finite element analysis of congruence, in the form of a pre-recorded lightning talk. This was Courtney's first conference presentation! Jay was selected to participate in the Ph.D. student competition - congrats, Jay! He presented his work, A Biphasic-Fluid Structure Interaction Mixture…

Today Brandon defended his doctoral thesis, Mechanically Mediated Fatigue Failure in Articular Cartilage: Experimental, Theoretical, and Computational Models. Not even a global pandemic & Zoom defense could stop him from officially becoming Dr. Zimmerman. Congratulations to MBL's newest Ph.D.!

CV, Katie, and Courtney attended the first ever Osteoarthritis Fellows in Training Bootcamp hosted by the Arthritis Foundation (AF) and Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF). They spent the weekend in Chicago connecting with their academic cousins, eating deep dish pizza, and most importantly learning about all things arthritis.

We're excited to welcome Kim Kroupa as our newest Ph.D. student! Kim is joining us after completing her Bachelors of Science at Boston University and will be studying Mechanical Engineering while here at Columbia. Welcome to the MBL fam, Kim!

Last week, Krista successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis "Investigations of Articular Cartilage Delamination Wear and a Novel Laser Treatment Strategy to Increase Wear Resistance." Congrats Krista on officially being "Dr. Krista Durney"!

Chieh successfully defended his thesis, titled "Implementation and Validation of Finite Element Framework for Passive and Active Membrane Transport in Deformable Multiphasic Models of Biological Tissues and Cells." After graduation he will be a postdoc at the University of Minnesota. Congrats Chieh!

Congrats to Krista and Steve on their wedding!

Brandon won first place in the PhD student paper competition at SB3C 2017 in Tucson, AZ. He presented on his new biphasic frictional contact algorithm. Congrats Brandon!

Prof. Gerard Ateshian was awarded the H. R. Lissner medal at SB3C 2017 in Tucson, AZ. The H.R. Lissner Medal recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of bioengineering. These achievements may be in the form of (1) significant research contributions in bioengineering; (2) development of new methods of measuring in bioengineering; (3) design of new equipment and instrumentation in bioengineering; (4) educational impact in the training of bioengineers; and/or (5) service to the bioengineering community, in general, and to the Bioengineering Division of ASME, in particular. Congrats Prof…

Congrats to Alex Cigan, Bob Nims, and Brian Jones for successfully defending their PhD! We will all miss you guys!

Congrats to Mike who accepted a position as an assistant professor at the Boston University mechanical engineering department! We wish you the best of luck!
