Today Dr. Sevan Oungoulian successfully defended his dissertation, "Friction and Wear Measurements of Articular Cartilage Against Non-Native Materials". Congrats, Sevan!

Congratulations to Mike and Jill on their wedding!

The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Mechanical Engineering proudly announce the appointment of Gerard Ateshian as the Andrew Walz Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

GERARD ATESHIAN is chair of Columbia Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and has a joint appointment in biomedical engineering. His research combines theoretical, computational, and experimental methods to address the biomechanics and growth of biological soft tissues and cells. As founder and director of Columbia’s Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory since 1996,…

Ines Basalo (PhD 2005) has been appointed Assistant Professor of Practice in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Miami, FL, effective January 1st, 2014. Dr. Basalo obtained her degree at Columbia, performing research in the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory on the topic of cartilage lubrication.

Professor Ateshian received the Basic Science Award from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International in 2013.  The award recognizes his outstanding work in the area of cartilage mechanics, lubrication and tissue engineering. The award ceremony took place at the annual OARSI meeting in Philadelphia, PA, on April 18, 2013.  Prof. Ateshian gave a 15 minute presentation summarizing his research on the role of interstitial fluid pressurization in cartilage lubrication. A description of the award and a list of recipients from prior years can be found on the OARSI website.
